One Good Reason To Check Your Spam Folder

Are You Losing Voice Work To Your Spam Folder? Some days I feel like if it weren’t for spam email I’d get no email. Male enhancement, dead billionaires who want to leave me their fortune, sales pitches, marketing gimmicks, free vacations that sound too good to be true because they are. You name it, it’s likely in my spam folder. In the glory days of snail mail a lot of it was junk. In the digital age not much has changed!

So when’s the last time you checked your spam folder? Do you ever check it? Or do you just delete it occasionally or allow it to delete itself? If you’re one of those people that never look at it, you might want to reconsider.

I’ve always been in the habit of checking my spam folder occasionally. By that I mean, maybe once a week or every couple of weeks at best. But I recently learned a very valuable lesson about checking it more regularly and more carefully.

People Are Trying To Connect With You

Do you give your email address out online? I do. I post mine on Twitter, LinkedIn and other social media accounts. It’s also posted all over my blog. If a client wants to get in touch with me about a voiceover I don’t want them to have to jump through hoops to do it. No searching for my contact info. No filling out long web forms that may not be mobile friendly. I just give my email address. It’s marc@marccottonline.com in case you were wondering.

As a result of my email address being everywhere, I do have people email me on a pretty consistent basis asking questions about voiceover. Anything from quote requests to general inquiries about how it works. The thing is, not all of those emails go into my inbox.

One Good Reason To Check Your Spam

Good customer service means promptly replying to emails. Not losing them forever in your spam folder and never answering a question someone has sent you. That’s a good way to lose voice work. If you’re not checking your spam folder, there is a good chance you’re guilty of this and you may not even realize it.

A few week ago, had I not checked my spam folder, I would have lost a voiceover job. The client sent the email and it went straight to my spam folder. It was pure luck, if I’m being honest, that I even saw the message there. I’m not leaving it to luck anymore. Since that day, I’ve checked my spam folder daily and I’ll continue to do so.

So let me ask you, have you scanned your spam folder lately?
